Service Learning at JBS

Action: Taking “action” on issues in the local, national, or global community.
Service as Action is an integral part across our four IB programmes (PYP, MYP, DP/CP) and is a mandatory requirement for students to complete.
It starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to take an active part in the communities in which they live. Giving importance to the sense of community throughout the programme encourages responsible citizenship and seeks to deepen the student’s knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

In the Primary Years Programme (PYP) pupils are often asked to seek and apply action from the units of inquiry they are studying and this is best showcased as part of the PYP exhibition in Grade 5.
The students are expected to be Active Citizens and to take action to show understanding, to apply knowledge and skills, to reflect, and often to make a contribution to a cause or stimulate positive change.

In the Secondary School Service learning is a requirement that pupils need to fulfil to successfully complete the IB programme:
- For the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) pupils must fulfil Service as Action (SA)
- For the IB Diploma Programme (DP) pupils must fulfil Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS)
- For the IB Career Programme (CP) pupils must fulfil Service Learning (SL)
The MYP Service as Action (SA) programme provides an avenue for experiential learning through a range of physical, service and community activities. SA projects and activities are experiences that students gain as they organize or participate in activities with the desired expectation to help others.
The DP Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) requires students to take part in a variety of experiences within, for and outside of the school community. It involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Activity seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service within the community offers a vehicle for new learning with academic value. The three strands of CAS enhance students’ personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and enable journeys of self-discovery.
The CP Service Learning (SL) is the development and application of knowledge and skills towards meeting an identified and authentic community need. The SL students must cover SL experiences that correlate to their career-related academic studies, utilizing skills, understandings and values developed in these studies. SL will allow students to meet people in society with different careers and roles to discover, explore and understand diverse careers in new ways.
