Cultivating student leadership at JBS is a critical part of our practice for both primary and secondary students.
We offer our students leadership opportunities to further develop character traits allowing them to perform better inside and outside of school, foster new friendships and have a broader outlook on the world – all aspects essential for a 21st-century learner.
Many of our enrichment and after-school activities focus on leadership. Clubs and societies, such as the Flying Falcons, Model United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Environment Committee, and the JBS Alumni Officers aim to provide students with the opportunity to help shape themselves into the global leaders of tomorrow.
We also have a number of formal student leadership positions within the Primary and Secondary Schools, for which students go through a rigorous interview and selection process. These groups of students are then tasked with working together to bring about positive change within the school and wider community.
Inspiring Leaders at JBS
1 Head boy and 1 Head girl
This role is the most prestigious of our student leadership roles at JBS and is open only to Grade 12 pupils who are then voted for by the secondary pupils of the school. Their main role is to chair the secondary school council and be the voice of the JBS students, to drive student and school initiatives and work closely with the school’s staff leadership team. They are also expected to support and meet with the Primary School Council to provide whole school collaboration. Other duties include attending the School Advisory Board meetings and provide a student leadership report to its members which include staff members, parent representatives and central office members. Furthermore, they act as hosts during events such as national day, international day and parent information events.
School Council
JBS has two School Councils.
The Primary School Council is formed by the class representatives from all the Grade 3, 4 and 5 classes. Any student can apply and run for class representative. The decision of who represents the class is made by their peers through a voting system once election speeches and presentations have been concluded.
The Secondary School Council is chaired by the Deputy Head Boy and Girl and the members of the council are made up of the House Captains and Vice-Captains from each of the four school Houses.
The students of each school council work on many projects and initiatives throughout the year. They are involved in the organisation of charity events such as Pink Day and school events such as the ‘Happiness picnic’ and ‘Winter Wonderland’.
House Captains
At JBS we run a student rewards system that is related to our House system across the whole school. Every child is assigned a ‘House’ and can earn House Points for their teams. House Captains and Vice-Captains are elected at the beginning of each academic year on a Primary and Secondary school level. The Captain’s responsibilities include organising specific House events, motivating their teammates to participate in all House competitions as well as being a great role model for their House peers.
